15 years ago nobody used to practice yoga in Caribbean. Today it is incredibly popular. We dare to foretell that the same will happen with Ayurvedic medicine, which teaches us that nature protects that who protects her. The increasing interest in this ancient medical science, originated in sacred Hindu texts, passed down through centuries in the schools ¬¬, and now in universities like the University of Buenos Aires, invites us to an approach that goes beyond physical illness and its treatment: it deals with science, art and a philosophy of living.
What does the word Ayurveda mean?
Ayurveda, Sanskrit word that means “science of life,” is the ancient Indian medicine practiced until today by hundreds of generations of indian traditional doctors. Ayurevda comprises of two words. Ayur and Veda. Ayur means Life and Veda means to know. Thus Ayurveda means ‘Knowledge of Life’.
Ayurvedic medicine was born out of the practices, experiments and personal observations of enlightened sages, who explored the path of existential and spiritual well-being. In the beginning, it was taught from master to disciple. Around 2500 B. C. to 1000 B.C., the great scholars and doctors Dhanwantari, Charak and Susruta authored the first written records. Since then up to the present time, countless monks, doctors and researchers improved it with the results obtained.
As its name suggests, Ayurveda comes from the Vedas, the sacred Hindu texts. It is considered the fifth Veda, the other four being Atharva Veda, Rig Veda, Sama Veda and Yajur Veda. According to the Ayurveda, the body, the vital energy (prana), the mind and the spirit form an indivisible unit. Therefore, Ayurveda simultaneously treats the diseases on these four fronts, with their own methods and medicines. In essence, Ayurvedic medicine does not attack the symptoms but the very root of the disease, to achieve a definitive healing. For that purpose it resorts to life regimes, diets, cleansings and organic detoxifications to correct physiological alterations. Also, it uses natural medicines prepared with selected herbs according to the season of the year, the hour and appropriate lunar phase, metals and nonmetals and certain animal products. It also uses ancient autovaccines, yogi techniques, mantras, energization and other methods.
